Factors Impacting Egress Window Cost
Type of Foundation Wall
The type of foundation which needs to be cut is going to effect the price in most circumstances. Performing the concrete cutting is a labor-intensive task either way, but cutting through a solid-poured, steel-reinforced concrete foundation is more difficult than cutting through a wall made of concrete blocks.
Height of Basement
Basement egress window codes require the bottom of the 'net clear opening' of the window be within 44" (inches) from the inside finished floor [1]. This means the taller the basement, the taller the window needed to meet these requirements. The window could also be dropped, but in this case you would want to build a header across the top. So, in either scenario, the height of the basement will be a factor in the final cost.
Before Or After The Basement Has Been Finished
We often install egress windows in basements which have already been completely finished, and this is also a factor which can lead to more work (to re-finish the egress window area) and to higher costs. If you plan on finishing your basement, it is much better to go ahead and spend the money to have an egress window installed now rather than wait until the project becomes more complicated.
With all the above being said, a basement egress window system installed by a professional is well-worth the cost. This is one type of project where the 'cheapest' should not out-weight experience and dependability.
